 PROJECT of HEART WEBSITE

Project of Heart” is an inquiry based, hands-on, collaborative, inter-generational, artistic journey of seeking truth about the history of Aboriginal people in Canada.

Its purpose is to:

  • Inspire the building of relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Canada based on mutual understanding, respect and collective action to create a different future
  • Examine the history and legacy of Indian Residential Schools in Canada and to seek the truth about that history, leading to the acknowledgement of the extent of loss to former students, their families and communities
  • Commemorate the lives of the thousands of Indigenous children who died as a result of the residential school experience.
  • Call Canadians to action, through social justice endeavors, to change our present and future history collectively
  • and more....

Truth and Reconciliation

July 1st, 2017 - A special day for important conversations.

We have a lot of work to do on this action plan.

As we move past the celebrations of Canada's 150th Birthday, we must look at the diverse issues and problems we face and understand the different stake holders and their points of view. Part of our national family is hurting, and no wonder when we look at the history of how our First Nations people were treated...and how they are still treated. It's had a huge inter-generational impact and severe consequences.

Our own Chancellor, Shirley Cheechoo at Brock University is a First Nations woman and film maker. Her personal story of assimilation and her life in residential settings is heart wrenching. She survived totally inhumane conditions that no human should have been subjected too.

This short clip is worth watching to help us all understand the issues at hand and to help everyone to start thinking about, how in our sphere of influence, we can make a positive difference. It's been swept under the rug long enough but we are taking steps in the right direction with the Truth and Reconciliation Calls For Action.

It's time for improved understanding of the issues and time for action.

What can you do?
Share the video and start the conversation and your ideas.

Maclean's added a new video: Why some Indigenous people are calling out Canada 150.

INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

TRUTH RECONCILIATION REPORT

What does it mean to you?

In my discussions with my education students,  on diversity in Canada, I have discovered many do not know what it is all about.

As teachers we should know what the Truth and Reconciliation Report says are the next steps for educators.

Look at this excellent article and what Canadians are saying are their feelings on what
they can do to help bring our nation together to build a bright future fall all.

Check out Ivana Yellowback's comments in this report by CBC. She is a student at the University of Winnipeg, who talks about OUR indigenous nations and the friendship treaties that were made with Canada.  She hopes education talks about them and that Canada, as an "honourable nation keeps our promises and that respect".

Look at this CBC report that came out, October 19th, 2016.

  2. The Brock University IRC has just renewed its subscription to ON-Core, the Canadian video streaming library correlated to the Ontario curriculum. You can find some of the Indigenous Peoples content by searching the subject "Native Studies" (now in revision by the MOE) and by Social Studies - Gr 5 - Heritage and Identity - First Nations and Europeans...
